MAYOR REED NAMES TOP ESSAY CONTEST AWARD AFTER THE LATE EVANGELENE L. KIMBER
Harrisburg, PA Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that the top award for the Citys annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest will now be named for the late Evangelene L. Kimber, the late principal of the John Harris Campus of Harrisburg High School.
Reed said the award to be called the Evangelene L. Wormsley-Kimber Award for Excellence will be given to the best overall essay entered in the yearly contest. He said the award was established in order to memorialize Ms. Kimbers life as an outstanding educator and mentor. Ms. Kimber passed away on September 15, 2008, after suddenly succumbing to an unexpected illness.
Reed said the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest is conducted within both the Harrisburg School District and parochial schools where Harrisburg youngsters attend. The Contest is open to all students who wish to participate. A provocative question is posed and students are asked to write a responsive essay. The top three winners in each grade level are recognized during an awards ceremony that occurs each January as part of the Citys Black History Enrichment Series. The best overall essay, regardless of the students grade level, will receive the Kimber Award for Excellence.
The Contest is sponsored by the Mayors Office and Pinnacle Health and the submission deadline for finished essays is November 24, 2008. Additional information may be obtained by calling the Department of Parks and Recreation at 255-3020.
