MAYOR ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR INITIAL NORTHERN GATEWAY MULTI-USE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
Harrisburg, PA – Mayor Stephen R. Reed and officials from the Vartan Group today announced plans for the development and construction of a five-story, $13 million multi-use project to be located at 1500 North 6th Street in the City’s Uptown.
Reed said the project will feature a restaurant and neighborhood retail shops on the street-level. The upper floors will provide over 40 residential dwelling units. The top floor will feature several loft units. A below-grade parking level will provide 60 parking stalls for residents of the complex and for retailers.
The Mayor also said the rooftop of the building will be a manicured common space for the use of the building’s residents. He said there will be private access to the parking area and to the elevators which will ensure high security for its residents. He said the building will be a state-of-the-art "green" complex which will abide by the LEED design approach. The building will total 100,000 square feet.
Reed said most of the units would be for homeownership while some of the apartment-style units would be available for rent. He said market research indicates the complex will be most attractive to the young professional demographic group earning between $35,000.00 and $75,000.00 per year.
Mayor Reed said, "This project is an important initial component to the Northern Gateway Project that, over the years, will transform this part of the Uptown."
Reed said the Northern Gateway Project is a staged, integrated development plan between the City of Harrisburg and several local developers. The Northern Gateway Project includes the widening of North 7th Street. It is expected to draw professional, clerical and retail jobs to the North 6th and 7th Street Corridor and the surrounding neighborhoods. Estimated costs of improvement in the coming years for infrastructure, development and new construction exceed $150,000,000.00 and is expected that 1,500 construction jobs and 850 permanent jobs will result from the Project upon its completion.
