SUSPECT ARRESTED IN SHOOTING OF U.S. MARINE; OTHER ROBBERY SUSPECTS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today said city police have arrested 20- year old Daniel Quinones, of the first block of Evergreen Street, on multiple charges connected with his shooting of a U.S. Marine home on leave on August 14 near Mulberry and Hummel Streets. Quinones has now been charged with Attempted Homicide, Aggravated Assault and weapons law violations in connection with the shooting.

Reed said Quinones and U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Sean Grimes, age 20, had a physical altercation earlier in the evening of August 20, during which Grimes got the better of Quinones but then backed off, indicating he didn’t want to hurt Quinones. Quinones then returned about an hour later and began firing his .380 caliber handgun at Grimes, striking him once in the back and causing serious internal injuries that caused emergency surgery and an extended hospital stay.

Quinones has been on the run since and was featured in a Dauphin County Crimestoppers alert yesterday. A witness tip to police led to his capture yesterday afternoon around 12:30 p.m. in the 300 block of S. 13th Street, where he was taken into custody without incident. Quinones, of the 1200 block of Mulberry Street, was currently out on bail in connection with three other criminal incidents, and faces charges of Reckless Endangerment, Possession with Intent to Deliver, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and firearms violations. He was placed in Dauphin County Prison on $2 million bail by District Justice Michael Smith.

The Mayor said the injured Grimes has since been discharged from the hospital and faces an extensive convalescence period. Grimes was home on leave from the Corps, and had recently completed training. He was not home on leave from overseas duty, as witnesses had earlier and incorrectly told police at the time of the incident.

Reed said city police have also arrested a suspect in a July robbery of a corner grocery store. 18-year old Samuel Lindsay, of the 2100 block of Kensington Street was arrested at his home this morning by city detectives in connection with the July 6 robbery of the Golden Touch corner store at 1919 Derry Street. A 36- year old store clerk advised police he had just been robbed at gunpoint by two individuals, one of whom had pistol whipped him about the head in order to force him to open the register. Subsequent investigation revealed the gunman to be Lindsay, who had partially covered his face during the robbery. Police have now charged Lindsay with single counts each of Aggravated Assault, Robbery, Carrying a Firearm without a License and Conspiracy. Lindsay was taken into custody just before 9 a.m. this morning and is currently being questioned. His 15-year old juvenile accomplice in the robbery is being charged with the same counts.

Reed said police have also arrested 40-year old Darrell Evans on Aggravated Assault and Reckless Endangerment charges as a result of a fight that occurred last night near 17th and Hanover Streets. Evans attacked a 21-year old man Hall Manor after he interceded in a fight between Evans and a relative. Evans attacked the victim with a two-foot long sword during the fight, though the victim sustained no injuries. Police driving by witnessed the fight as it began and quickly stopped it before further injury was sustained. Evans sustained a cut to the head during the fight.

Police are also investigating an overnight robbery at the 29th Street Mobil Station that occurred just before Midnight. Reports indicate that a black male entered the store while both clerks were absent from the store area and withdrew a small amount of cash from the register. Neither of the on-duty clerks were even aware of the robbery until other witnesses told police they saw the robbery occur. Both of the clerks were busy with other duties away from the cash register and unaware that the robber had entered the store.

Witnesses said the robber, described as a black male, 5’10” tall, thin build and wearing a long-sleeve shirt and red bandana, entered the store with a handgun after being dropped off by a grey or silver-colored full-sized van with a ladder on the rear. The robber quickly emptied the register and climbed back into the van, fleeing north on N. 25th Street. There were no injuries in the robbery.
