CITY TV STATION TO HOST LIVE “THANKSGIVING DRIVE” FOR AREA NEEDY; DONATIONS OF NON-PERISHABLE FOODS, WINTER COATS & CLOTHING, HATS, GLOVES & SCARVES SOUGHTHarrisburg, PA’Mayor Stephen R. Reed today invited midstate residents and visitors to the inaugural “Thanksgiving Drive”, being conducted by the city’s cable television station WHBG TV-20 on Friday, November 19, from Noon to 8:00 p.m. at the station’s studios on Court Street in downtown. Featuring live music by local bands, the special fundraiser will be broadcast live by the station and is intended to solicit the public’s donation of non-perishable foods and winter clothing, including coats, hats, gloves and scarves for area needy. Reed said the “Thanksgiving Drive” will be WHBG TV-20’s first-ever live television broadcast, and will feature local celebrities, live music and more, and the public is invited to attend. Persons donating goods will also be given the opportunity to appear on camera during the event. “There are many in the midstate who face a less than happy holiday season,” said the Mayor. “While there are many charitable toy drives at this time of the year, including the U.S. Marines popular Toys For Tots drive, there is great need for cold weather clothing and non-perishable food items. We invite everyone to attend the festivities and bring along something for those in need.” Live music will be featured throughout the daylong event, with staging being erected on Court Street beneath the Walnut Street Parking Garage, which allows the event to go on rain or shine. Scheduled entertainers include the Luv Gods, Michelle and Rob Yost, The Sherri Mullen Trio, Bridges and A Bottle, and Black In Style. The Mayor said the inaugural “Thanksgiving Drive” is being sponsored and produced by the City of Harrisburg, and is joined by co-sponsor Giant Foods. Other supporting firms and organizations include the SouthCentral Pennsylvania Food Bank, who will be given the foodstuffs for distribution to area needy, and the city Department of Parks and Recreation, which annually conducts a winter clothing drive for children participating in city recreation programs. The Mayor said Court Street from Market to Walnut Street will be closed to traffic for the day beginning at 9 a.m. to allow for staging and other Thanksgiving Drive set-up. Parkers exiting the Walnut Street Garage can simply utilize Strawberry Alley to access N. Second and N. Third Streets for egress out of the garage.
