CONGRESSMAN HOLDEN DELIVERS $642,590 IN FEDERAL FUNDS FOR CITY POLICE AND PUBLIC EDUCATIONHarrisburg, PA—Congressman Tim Holden (17th) today presented funds totaling $642,590 for the Harrisburg School District. The funds include $400,000 from the U.S. Department of Education’s Smaller Learning Communities Program, and $242,590 from the federal COPS Secure Our Schools program for increasing security at public schools. “These funds are vital to both public safety and public education in Harrisburg,” said Mayor Stephen R. Reed, “and we are delighted with Congressman Holden’s good efforts in securing them for our use. During his term of these most recent two years, millions of dollars in federal funding, that have never before been received, have come to this region and we owe much of that to Congressman Holden’s support and work in Washington D.C. on our behalf.” Reed said the COPS Secure Our Schools program funding pays for half of the costs of new security equipment, training and other public safety activities that improve security at Harrisburg School District properties and on school grounds. The Smaller Learning Communities Program grant funding will pay for planning and implementation strategies to increase mathematic and literacy skills for students in the 9th and lower grades. Congressman Holden said “he was delighted to be of service to Harrisburg and the other communities of the 17th Congressional District in Dauphin, Lebanon, Berks, Perry and Schuylkill Counties, and looks forward to assuring that the region continues to get its fair share of federal help on important endeavors.” “When it comes to dollars being given to Harrisburg and this region,” said Holden, “we in Washington know that they are dollars being well-spent.” XXX |
