MOST STREET FLOODING RECEDES; PAXTON CREEK FLOODEDHarrisburg, PA—Mayor Stephen R. Reed tonight reported that street flooding that had closed many streets in Harrisburg has largely receded and that only Cameron and Maclay Street, and the 1000 block of Maclay Street at the Farm Show Complex, remains flooded and closed at this hour. Larger problems occurred as a result of the Paxton Creek flooding. Creek waters went over their banks at 4:45 p.m. today, bringing water to several hundred mostly commercial and industrial structures and facilities. The Creek runs north to south through most of the city. Throughout the day, extensive flooding from the rains dumped by the remnants of Hurricane Jeanne caused many streets and intersections to be closed due to flooding and some nearby structures also received basement water as a result. Affected areas included Cameron Street at Sycamore, Herr and Maclay Streets, 3rd and Muench Sts., Green and Schuykill Sts., 18th and Derry Sts., and 6th and Broad Sts. It is not expected that the Susquehanna River will rise to flood stage as a result of these latest rains. Harrisburg and surrounding communities sustained major flooding last week in the wake of rains from what had been Hurricane Ivan. XXX |
