REGIONAL SUMMIT SCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER 14 AT WILDWOOD CENTER

Harrisburg, PA—Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that the South Central Assembly for Effective Governance will hold their annual summit meeting on Thursday, October 14, 2004, at the Harrisburg Area Community College's Wildwood Conference Center. Sessions begin at 8:45 a.m. and run through 5:00 p.m.

Reed, who chairs the regional Assembly, said “Summit 2004—Strategy for Regional Prosperity “ will focus upon the recommendations contained in the Brookings Institution’s report, Back To Prosperity: A Competitive Agenda for Renewing Pennsylvania. The full report can be read online at www.brookings.edu/urban/publications/pa.htm.

The day will be dedicated to ensuring a dialogue among the eight counties’ leaders in the public, non-profit, business and education sectors for developing a regional strategy to implement the Brookings’ report’s recommendations. Particular attention will be focused on land use implications of infrastructure investment decision making, approaches to downtown renewal and restored vitality, and renewing governance.

Session leaders will include Amy Liu, Deputy Director of the Metropolitan Policy Program of the Brookings Institution, and Janet Milkman, President and Chief Executive Officer of 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania, who will describe the development of a network of regional partners to encourage grass roots efforts to understand and implement Brookings’ recommendations. Regional political and civic leaders and industry experts have been asked to give their input to the issue.

Reed said the annual summit is geared towards local community and business leaders, as well as elected and appointed municipal officials.
