NO BOIL WATER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FOR HARRISBURG WATER SYSTEM

Harrisburg, PA—Mayor Stephen R. Reed today said there is not and has never been a “boil water advisory” for customers of the Harrisburg Water System.

Over the past two days, there have been periodic inaccurate reports that customers of the city system—which serves the City of Harrisburg and portions of four other municipalities—needed to boil water before it was safe to drink or use for cooking.

If any residence or business receives their water bill from the City of Harrisburg, they can use water in normal fashion. The city water system was not affected by the current flood, and has been operating normally, and continually meets or exceeds all federal and state drinking water standards.

In fact, the city water system is presently supplying treated water to the neighboring water system—United Water Company—which serves other communities on the East Shore. The city established inter-connections between the city and United Water Co. in the past decade to deal with just such an emergency as exists now, so that the city could supply water in the event the other system needed it. The city has been supplying United with water since Saturday, starting first with raw water from the DeHart Dam—which went to United’s North 6th Street water treatment plant in Susquehanna Twp. When that plant became flooded, the city switched to supplying fully treated and filtered water to United through the under-ground inter-connections, none of which have been impacted by the flood.
