HEAVY RAINFALL LEAVES EXTENSIVE DAMAGE, PROBLEMS IN WAKE

Harrisburg, PA—Mayor Stephen R. Reed has declared a State of Disaster Emergency throughout the City of Harrisburg as of 7:04 p.m. tonight as a result of extensive damage caused by the heavy rainfall hitting the city, with high winds, starting shortly after 6 p.m.

Multiple fires have occurred, including a general alarm fire at 2200 Logan Street, which was caused when a falling tree knocked down a utility pole with electrical lines, which then fell into the structure. Two buildings have sustained fire, smoke and water damage, one of them extensive.

There are power outages throughout the city, mostly in the Allison Hill area. Many dozens of streets and intersections are flooded, including along major arteries. Significant traffic detouring is now occurring. Many streets will remain closed until further notice, including portions of Market and Front Streets.

Reed has activated the city’s Emergency Operations Center, along with additional police personnel and crews from the public works and parks and recreation departments. They will be focused on clearing streets, homes and vehicles of downed trees, reduced flooding, and increasing patrols in areas without power.

Complicating matters are the numbers of vehicles, which have been flooded and have been pushed into streets and other sites, all of which will have to be removed.
