BATH STORE “CLEANS UP” DOWNTOWNHarrisburg, PA – Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that Third Street has a unique new boutique to add to its existing eclectic mix of retailers during ribbon cutting ceremonies to officially open Yummi, a bath store featuring completely homemade products. The Mayor said that Yummi is a distinctive new specialty retailer who promises to help customers become ‘bath savvy.” The store offers various soaps such as “Wash Away Your Sins,” “Honey Almond Oatmeal,” and “What’s Up Doc,” which uses carrot as a main ingredient, and other personal grooming products. Reed said that upon entering Yummi, customers are immediately greeted by the fresh, calming scent of Yummi’s various soaps, which sit on shelves in large loaves. Customers are encouraged to pick them up and to read each soap’s description. When they have decided on a soap, store owner Dana McFadden cuts off a piece for the customer and returns the soap to the shelf. “When you come in here, you get to touch and smell,” said McFadden. “It involves all the senses.” Yummi is unique from other bath stores because all of the products are natural, homemade and free from chemicals and detergents, said McFadden. She makes all of Yummi’s soaps, lotions, lip balms and bath products in the store. Each soap takes about one hour to make. “This store is a one-of-a-kind addition to Harrisburg’s distinctive variety of unique retailers,” said Mayor Reed. In addition to McFadden’s homemade bath products, Yummi also offers gift items such as pajamas and slippers. Dog shampoos and treats are also available. The store’s name was inspired by its customers, said McFadden. People frequently smell her soaps and react by saying “yummy.” McFadden said she has been interested in making homemade bath products since childhood, when she would imitate her mother’s beauty regimen. Today, her own daughter Peyton inspires her to maintain her interest. The concept for the Yummi store developed out of McFadden’s two existing stands at the York Farmer’s Market. She decided to expand when she heard about a Strawberry Square retail space contest sponsored by Harristown Development Corporation, the managers of Strawberry Square. Yummi, along with hot sauce and salsa retailer Belches N Burps, won the contest and has allowed McFadden to turn her passion into a business. XXX |
