DOWNTOWN TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS NECESSARY FOR SINKHOLE REPAIRS

Harrisburg, PA—Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that repairs to a recently discovered sinkhole in the 100 block of North Second Street, near the Locust Street intersection, will require some minor temporary street restrictions beginning Monday, July 12, and lasting until repairs have been completed.

Reed said city crews recently discovered a large depression in the parking lanes of the east side of N. Second Street near the intersection with the 200 block of Locust Street. City crews could take several days to repair the depression, which unaddressed could have developed into a major sinkhole.

The Mayor said the traffic restrictions will involve the shifting of travel lanes in the 100 and 200 blocks of N. Second Street into the parking lanes on the western side of the street. Traffic will also not be permitted to turn right off of N. Second Street onto the 200 block of Locust Street, although Locust Street traffic coming from Front Street will be able to proceed straight through the Second Street intersection. Persons using the Locust Street Garage for daily parking will have to go around to Front Street and proceed east on Locust off of Front Street to access the garage.

Reed said the repairs should be completed within a few days, allowing traffic patterns to return to normal. But final curing of the concrete and repaving could take several more weeks.
