New Traffic Signals Operational At Three City Intersections; Total Of 36 Intersections Included In Multi-Year Project
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that additional intersections now have new traffic signals to handle increased traffic volume more safely. New signal lights have now been installed at Cameron and Calder Streets, Fifth and Walnut Streets, and at S. 19th and Sycamore Streets. Work also continues on the new intersection being created at 21st Street at State and Walnut Streets, which also includes new traffic signals when it is completed in late Summer. It is the first time any of these intersections have ever had signals.
Mayor Recognizes German Police Officer For Contribution To Cow Parade; Proceeds To Benefit City Police Youth Activities
The popular Cow Parade public art initiative was highlighted today as Mayor Stephen R. Reed recognized the contributions of Detective Antje Freudenberg of Adendorf, Germany, who sponsored ‘Maxi’ the ‘KlitschCow’, which is on display in Riverfront Park.
The New Papine Jamaican Restaurant Opens In Midtown
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today conducted the ribbon cutting for the New Papine Jamaican Restaurant at 1100 N. Third Street in the city’s midtown neighborhood. The distinctive new ethnic eatery features authentic Jamaican and Caribbean cuisine set in a unique tropical atmosphere.
City & Community First Fund Team Up Again To Offer Highly Acclaimed Low-Cost Small Business Start-Up Classes; Sessions Begin July 20
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that the City of Harrisburg and the Community First Fund(CFF) will again offer low-cost business planning classes for persons planning to start or who are already operating a small business. The highly-acclaimed CORE-FOUR certified course runs eight conseccutive weeks and will again be taught by noted midstate financial expert and CFF Capital Region Director John Sider, along with other financial, tax, insurance and small business professionals, and is designed to provide budding entrepreneurs with the skills, knowledge and understanding of successful small business operations and dynamics.
Mayor Reed Announces Formation Of Harrisburg Urban Studio Task Force
Inspired by the Auburn University College of Architecture’s Rural Studio, Harrisburg Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced the formation of the Harrisburg Urban Studio Task Force to help improve the City’s neighbor-hoods with architecture.
Draft Harrisburg School Budget Has No Tax Increase
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today said the now completed draft Harrisburg School District budget does not contain any tax increase for the coming school fiscal year, which runs from July 1, 2004 to June 30, 2005.
Mayor Presents Police Awards
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today gave official recognition to the outstanding efforts of more than 85 city police officers, citizens, public employees and others for actions ranging from saving lives to the capture of armed and dangerous criminal suspects. The awards program was begun by the Mayor in the 1980s as a way for the city to recognize the many contributions to public safety of the city’s police officers, private citizens and others.
Nation’s Military Forces To Be Saluted On May 15 On City Island Armed Forces Day; Public Invited
The largest Armed Forces Day Celebration in the state will be a salute to the men and women now serving our nation, and will be held on Harrisburg City Island on Saturday, May 15, from 9 a.m. to Dusk, Mayor Stephen R. Reed and Rear Admiral Justin D. McCarthy SC, USN, Commander, Naval Supply Systems Command today announced. The unique event transforms City island into a sprawling military base for the day, and features an extensive array of military displays, exhibitions, living history demonstrations, speakers, family and children’s activities all of which are free and open to the public.
Harrisburg Housing Authority Attains Top National Ranking
Mayor Stephen R. Reed and Harrisburg Housing Authority Chairman Leon J. Feinerman today announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has designated the Harrisburg Housing Authority (HHA) a “High Performer”, the nation’s highest public housing performance evaluation possible. The distinction makes Harrisburg one of the few agencies in the nation to attain the top ranking.

$2 Million Renovation Project Set To Begin At Morrison Towers In Downtown; All Public Housing Units To Undergo Extensive Energy Conservation Project; Saves $12 Million For Taxpayers In 12 Years
Mayor Stephen R. Reed and Harrisburg Housing Authority (HHA) Board Chairman Leon J. Feinerman today announced two major rehabilitation projects that will significantly improve public housing in Harrisburg and provide extensive energy cost savings into the next decade. The projects include the $2 million rehabilitation of the Morrison Towers building, and the implementation of an agency-wide system-wide energy conservation program that will realize more than $12 million in energy cost savings to taxpayers over the next twelve years.

Reed today announced that internationally acclaimed jazz music stars Alex Bugnon and Marion Meadows will host a “Summer Smooth Jazz Jam” as part of the city’s American MusicFest, which takes place July 3-6 in downtown Harrisburg. The special “Summer Smooth Jazz Jam” will be held at the Forum Theater at N. Fifth and Walnut Streets, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Messiah College Launches Harrisburg Institute Program In City—Bringing Student Housing And Volunteer Workers To Downtown
An innovative effort to connect Messiah college students with the urban environment was launched today by Mayor Stephen R. Reed and Messiah College Provost Kim Phipps as they dedicated the College’s newly-established college facility at 251 North Street in the downtown. The new headquarters facility will house Messiah’s “Harrisburg Institute”, the newest component of Messiah’s larger Harrisburg Initiative program, which provides student housing, charitable and civic engagement and academic enrichment for Messiah students.
The South Central Assembly for Effective Governance Launches Anti-Predatory Lending Initiative
Today several community leaders gathered in Harrisburg to launch an anti-predatory lending initiative that will target homeowners in eight south central Pennsylvania counties, including Dauphin, Lancaster, York, Adams, Lebanon, Cumberland, Franklin and Perry. The initiative will provide assistance to homeowners who may have been the victims of predatory lending and will provide the education necessary to help homebuyers avoid predatory lending in the future. Fannie Mae is providing $1 million investment for this experiment.

Mayor Stephen R. Reed, PA Liquor Control Board Chairman Jonathan H. Newman, and Harristown Vice President William Kohl today announced plans for the first-ever Central Pennsylvania Wine Festival, slated for Wednesday, May 5th, at the Harrisburg Hilton on Market Square. The daylong festival is part of Pennsylvania Wine Week 2004, and is highlighted by the attendance of one hundred of the world’s top vintners, with many of the attending owners or their winemakers making their first visit ever to Pennsylvania.
Postal Food Carriers To Collect Donated Food Door-To-Door This Saturday, May 8
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today joined members of the Harrisburg Branch 500 of the National Association of Letter Carriers and the U.S. Postal Service in kicking off the 2004 National Food Drive, which encourages the donation of non-perishable foodstuffs to the South Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and other regional food banks. The Harrisburg area Drive is being conducted this Saturday, May 8, in association with the U.S. Postal Service and United Way of the Capital Region.
