HOLDEN ANNOUNCES $625,000 FEDERAL EARMARKS FOR DAUPHIN COUNTY

WASHINGTON, D.C. (FEBRUARY 6, 2004) - At a press conference and check presentation held today, Congressman Tim Holden announced $625,000 in earmarked federal funds. Congressman Holden presented checks to Mayor Stephen R. Reed, City of Harrisburg for two projects in Dauphin County.

Specifics of the projects are:

  • Congressman Holden earmarked $300,000 in the VA/HUD Appropriations Bill for the City of Harrisburg to fund improvements to the Mish Run Sewer infrastructure. The Environment Protection Agency (EPA) will administer the funds. This project involves the installation of major separate storm sewer that would divert run-off from a 675-acre drainage area, away from the City’s combined sewer system. Currently storm water from this drainage area enters the combined sewer system, mixes with sanitary sewerage and is then discharged into the Paxton Creek. Although combined sewer overflows (CSO’s) are permitted under current regulations, it has been a longstanding goal of the EPA to eliminate the discharge of sewage into creeks and rivers, because they represent a public health hazard and degrade the water quality of receiving waters.
  • Congressman Tim Holden earmarked $325,000 in the Labor/HHS appropriations bill for The Harrisburg University of Science and Technology. The monies, which will be administered by the Department of Education, will be used to undertake the detailed planning of its seamless high school/university curriculum in conjunction with for new math and science equipment purchases. Funding will also be used to establish the preparatory school student enrichment program beginning in the summer of 2004. Part of the funding will be used to launch the business incubator space, serving IT focused start-ups in the second quarter of 2004, enabling students to fulfill their required internships on-site.

“I am very pleased that I was successful in securing funding for these important projects in Dauphin County,” commented Holden. “I believe one of my primary responsibilities as Congressman is to bring federal resources back to Pennsylvania to help my constituents.”
