Holden, Reed Meet With Congressional Leader To Discuss Harrisburg Transportation Issues

Congressman Holden (PA-17th), senior Pennsylvanian on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Congressman Jim Oberstar (MN-8th), ranking Member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and Mayor Stephen R. Reed, Mayor of the City of Harrisburg, held a press briefing today to discuss pending legislation to reauthorize the six year federal surface transportation spending authorization, known as TEA-3.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Competition Winners Announced: First Lady Judge Majorie Rendell Presents Awards

Mayor Stephen R. Reed and Pennsylvania First Lady Judge Marjorie Rendell today announced the winners of the City’s Twentieth Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Competition. The successful young authors were recognized at a special ceremony in their honor at the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, jr., City Government Center, the only government headquarters in the world to be named after the heroic civil rights leader. It was so named by an Executive Order issued by Mayor Reed.

Skyline Sports Complex On City Island Named ‘Field Of Distinction’ By Local Industry Group

The multi-purpose Skyline Sports Complex recreation field on Harrisburg’s City Island was recently selected as a “Field of Distinction” by the Keystone Athletic Field Managers Organization, Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced. The award is the highest honor for field maintenance and grounds-keeping, and will be presented to the city at a special awards banquet in late February.

Mayor Urges Residents & Businesses To Obtain Flood Insurance

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today urged city residents to obtain flood insurance for their properties if they do not currently have such coverage. Harrisburg’s extensive flood preparation and emergency management activities have resulted in a 15% reduction in base flood insurance premiums for the city businesses and residents from what would otherwise be normally charged.

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today conducted the grand opening for the newly-constructed 1100 S. Cameron Street office building, located at the strategic intersection of South Cameron and Sycamore Streets in south Harrisburg. The new multi-million dollar office center will house a variety of local social and human service agencies, including the Dauphin County Executive Commission on Drugs and Alcohol, Inc., the Dauphin County Mental Health/Mental Retardation Case Management Unit, Inc., and Northwestern Human Services.

New Traffic Patterns Now In Place For Market Square Plaza Tower Construction On N. 2nd Street

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that new traffic flow patterns have been put into place to accommodate the construction of the 18-story Market Square Plaza tower in the first block of N. Second Street. The new traffic lanes will be in place through the completion of the tower sometime in early 2005.

Commerce Bank Park To Become New Name Of City Island Stadium; 15-Year Sponsorship Nets $3.5 Million

Mayor Stephen R. Reed and Commerce Bank/Harrisburg, N.A. Chairman, President and CEO Gary L. Nalbandian today announced that the city and the midstate-based bank have reached a major sponsorship agreement for Harrisburg’s Riverside Stadium, home of the Harrisburg Senators, which will now be known as Commerce Bank Park. The sponsorship will generate $3.5 million for the city over the next 15 years, with much of the funding earmarked for a stadium rehabilitation project.

Public Meetings Set On Harrisburg Southern Gateway Project; Concepts, Including 3rd Street Extension, To Be Discussed

Reed today announced that two public open houses are scheduled to gather the public’s input on design concepts for the Harrisburg Southern Gateway Project, which includes the potential extension of South 3rd Street. Open houses are Thursday, January 15 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Atrium of Strawberry Square and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Market Square, Presbyterian Church, 20 South 2nd Street.
