Two New Specialty Bookstores And New Gourmet Thai Cafe Open In Historic Midtown

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today conducted dual grand opening services for two distinctive new specialty bookstores and an in-store gourmet Thai cafe in the growing Midtown Market District. The unique stores, The Midtown Scholar Bookstore and Ted L. Canaday Old & Rare Books, are located within a few seconds walk of each other and both are now open to the public.

Habitat For Humanity Kicks Off Permanent Headquarters Fund Drive; New And Expanded Services To Be Offered To Midstate

Mayor Stephen R. Reed and officials from the Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Harrisburg Area today launched the capital fundraising campaign, “A Home For Habitat”, to help establish a permanent headquarters facility for the organization in the City of Harrisburg. To be located at 100 N. 13th Street in the City’s Allison Hill neighborhood, the new Habitat headquarters will provide office and storage space, as well as an innovative new retail store that provides low-cost home building and rehabilitation materials.

Harvard’s Education and Business Schools Engage Harrisburg Schools in Partnership to Boost Student Success

The Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE), Harvard Business School (HBS), and nine urban school districts today announced the Public Education Leadership Project (PELP), a joint venture, collaboratively designed to dramatically improve the educational outcomes of these school systems. Harrisburg Schools join eight other districts; representing more than a million students, including many of the urban hubs across the nation such as Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis, and San Francisco.

City children living in South Harrisburg will have a free new after-school program to attend, Mayor Stephen R. Reed and Harrisburg City Councilwoman Vera White Reynolds today announced during dedication services for the ‘Just 4 Kids’ headquarters offices at 1408 S. 18th Street. The new program will offer sports, recreation, computer training, lifeskills development and more.

Harrisburg University Of Science And Technology Signals New Era In Higher Education For Pennsylvania

Signaling a new era in higher education and job creation for Pennsylvania, Harrisburg’s nationally unique education and economic-development enterprise now has a new name—Harrisburg University of Science and Technology. The name replaces Harrisburg Polytechnic Institute, and more accurately describes the comprehensive, technology-focused university, which integrates an affiliated regional math and science magnet high school and job-creating business incubator within its university programs.

3 Left Homeless & 2 Firefighters Injured After Early Morning Arson Fire In 1400 Block Of Mayflower St.

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that an early morning 3-alarm fire that destroyed four homes in the 1400 block of Mayflower Street was caused by arson. Three persons have been left homeless and two city firefighters sustained minor injuries as a result of the extensive Allison Hill blaze.

City Lead Poisoning Prevention Program Picked For $3 Million In Federal Funding

Harrisburg’s award winning lead poisoning prevention program is receiving a new $3 million Lead Hazard Control grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development(HUD), Mayor Stephen R. Reed announced today, allowing for the significant expansion of the city’s efforts to do further housing rehabilitation and other actions to prevent childhood lead poisoning. First begun by the Mayor in 1995, Harrisburg’s Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control program received $1.2 million in 2002 from the same federal grant program, and was selected for HUD’s top national ‘best practice’ award for innovative programming, which other cities across the Nation have now begun copying.

Reed today announced that Trick or Treat Night in Harrisburg and most of Dauphin County’s other communities will be held on Thursday, October 30, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The date and time for the fun-filled evening is annually set by the Dauphin County Chiefs of Police Association.
