CITY TRASH COLLECTION SUSPENDED FOR FRIDAY—WILL RESUME SATURDAY; CITY FISHING DERBY POSTPONED TO NEXT WEEKEND—SEPT. 27–29Harrisburg, PA—Mayor Stephen R. Reed has announced that all city trash collection services will be suspended on Friday, Sept. 19, and will resume on Saturday, Sept. 20. Also, the city’s popular free Fishing Derby, set for this weekend at Pool #1, has been postponed to next week. Mayor Reed said the high winds anticipated from Hurricane Isabel have prompted the suspension of trash collection services: “We believe the placement of trash and recycling containers may pose a potential safety hazard as a result of the high winds expected. Accordingly we believe the best course of action is to simply suspend trash collection services for the day and we urge everyone to keep their containers off the street until the storm passes.” The Mayor said both commercial and residential trash collection services will be affected. Owners of commercial properties, particularly high-volume generators such as restaurants and bars, are directed to keep their trash containers in a secure location and not out on the streets, where their containers may pose a hazard to pedestrians and motorists. Reed also announced the postponement of the city’s popular free “Get Hooked on Fishing” Fishing Derby, which had been set for Saturday through Monday at Pool #1, 1201 N. Sixth Street. It will instead be held next weekend, Saturday, Sept. 27 to Monday, September 29. The Mayor said the free annual family event features youth and family fishing for more than 100 Striped Bass that have been stocked in the pool. It is open to youth-only fishing on Saturday, with families and special needs groups permitted in on Sunday and Monday. A two-fish limit is in effect, and there is no catch and release of the fish.
