MAYOR ANNOUNCES NEW DATE FOR OPENING NIGHT FESTIVITIES FOR LEVITT PAVILION FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

Harrisburg, PA — Mayor Stephen R. Reed announced today that opening night festivities for the newly restored bandshell at Reservoir Park—the Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts—will now take place on Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at 7:00 p.m. An especially rainy spring has led to saturated ground conditions.

The summer series at Levitt Pavilion includes free outdoor concerts and cultural performances on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings throughout June, July and August, with most events starting at 7:00 p.m. Opening Night will feature Harrisburg Black History Month Showcase Youth Performers Timothy Cornelius, classical piano; Valonda Harris, original poetry; and Black Reign—Melissa McClendon, Brittany Rucker, & Tiffany Scott, contemporary ballet as well as a Popcorn Hat Players presentation of Rollicking Ripsnorters and cool jazz by local favorites Tarpley & Sound.

“Residents and visitors alike can still enjoy over 45 different free performances at the Levitt Pavilion this summer,” said Reed, “And Harrisburg Shakespeare Festival’s free production of Much Ado About Nothing will open as planned on Friday, June 6, at 7:30 p.m.”

All seating is on the lawn of the newly landscaped grounds of the bandshell area of Reservoir Park at 21st and Walnut Streets, so visitors should bring their blankets and lawn chairs. The free summer performing arts series is made possible by the Mortimer Levitt Foundation of Harrisburg, a registered not-for-profit corporation, in partnership with the City of Harrisburg and private donations.
