CITY NON-EMERGENCY PHONE LINES TO BE TEMPORARILY SHUT DOWN ON MON., JAN. 20; CALLERS CAN USE 911 INSTEADHarrisburg, PA—Mayor Stephen R. Reed today reported that upgrades to the city’s Police Communications Center telephone lines will cause the temporary shutdown of the city’s non-emergency phone lines on the Martin Luther King Holiday, Monday, January 20, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Callers with an emergency, however, will still be able to get help by simply calling 911. Reed said the work will involve the installation of some new cooling equipment in the city’s telephone switching system, and all phones must be brought offline before the upgrades can be accomplished by local Verizon technicians. Monday is a city holiday and most non-essential employees have the day off, making it a good time to perform the telephone system upgrade. Normal telephone service should resume by 11 a.m. During the shutdown period, callers needing emergency service from police, fire or ambulance services should as usual simply call 911 for assistance.
