November 23, 2002 — City 2002 Holiday Parade Winners Announced
Harrisburg’s annual Holiday Parade drew more than 30,000 people today, kicking off the Thanksgiving-Hanukkah-Christmas-Kwanzaa season in the midstate. More than 3,000 marchers in nearly 100 parade units, including 19 bands, made it one of the largest Holiday Parades in the 17-year history of the event, Mayor Stephen R. Reed announced this afternoon.

Harrisburg’s South Allison Hill will be the focus of a major new anti-crime and neighborhood development initiative made possible by a $185,000 federal “Weed and Seed” grant, Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced.

November 20, 2002 — New Pema Special Operations Facility To House State Urban Search & Rescue Team & Other Midstate Emergency Response Teams
Pennsylvania Governor Mark S. Schweiker and Mayor Stephen R. Reed today conducted groundbreaking ceremonies for a new state-of-the-art Special Operations Facility that will house the state’s Urban Search and Rescue Team as well as other specialized midstate emergency response agencies. The new structure is located on Harrisburg Authority-owned land at 100 Pine Drive, adjacent to the city’s Dr. Robert E. Young Water Treatment Plant.

November 14, 2002 — Region’s Holiday Season Kicks-Off With Annual Harrisburg Holiday Parade on November 23 at 10:00 A.M.
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today invited residents and visitors from throughout Central Pennsylvania to the City of Harrisburg’s 2002 Holiday Parade, set to begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 23 in downtown Harrisburg. The event marks the start of the 2002 Thanksgiving-Hanukkah-Christmas-Kwanzaa-New Year Season in the Greater Harrisburg Region.

November 13, 2002 — Vartan Donates Distinctive Clock To Harrisburg Transportation Center
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today unveiled a magnificent new clock located in the lobby of the Harrisburg Transportation Center at Fifth and Walnut Streets in downtown. The unique timepiece was donated to the historic Transportation Center by noted midstate philanthropist and businessman John O. Vartan under the auspices of the Harrisburg Millennium Commission, as a result of efforts by PAXTON HERALD publisher Annette Antoun, and retired State Police Communications Director Robert I. Kimmel.

November 12, 2002 — New Penn Center Office Complex To Occupy Former Polyclinic Hospital Site; Pa Dept. Of State To Be First Major Tenant
A portion of the strategic Polyclinic Hospital site in Uptown Harrisburg will become a major new office complex known as the Penn Center Harrisburg, bringing hundreds of new jobs and retaining hundreds more, Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced in conjunction with State Senator Jeffrey Piccola and State Representative Ron Buxton. The new office complex will eventually realize nearly 305,000 sq. ft. of fully renovated office space.

November 1, 2002 — City Students And Their Families To Receive Free Asthma Screening And Education Program
On behalf of Governor Mark Schweiker, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today announced an agreement with the City of Harrisburg that provides for $50,000 in civil penalties to be allocated to a new asthma prevention program being conducted by the City and the Hamilton Health Center. The penalties were agreed to between DEP and the City in a settlement agreement regarding multiple housekeeping violations at the city’s Resource Recovery Facility in South Harrisburg.
