May 22, 2002 — Cantone’s Downtown Opens On Restaurant Row
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today conducted grand opening services for the new Cantone’s Downtown restaurant at 114 N. Second Street, in the heart of ’Restaurant Row’. The distinctive new upscale eatery is owned by noted midstate restaurateur Nick Cantone and partners John and David Brinjac, and will feature Cantone’s legendary Southern Italian cuisine.

May 17, 2002 — City, Firefighters Agree To 4-Year Contract
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that the city has reached a new collective bargaining agreement with the International Association of Firefighters Local #428, who represent the city’s 103 uniformed firefighters. The contract calls for annual salary increases of 2% in 2002 and 3% in each succeeding year through 2005. The total cost of the contract over the four-year term is $1,595,310.

May 16, 2002 — Innovative Water Education Program Underway In City Schools
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that the City of Harrisburg is conducting an innovative new environmental educational curriculum for city school students in grades 2 to 7. Entitled the TAPWater program, the initiative includes a comprehensive educational kit for use by teachers, and in-classroom instructional visits by employees of the Harrisburg Bureau of Water. More than two dozen city school classrooms have already received the training, and more will be conducted before the end of the school year. The program will resume with the next school year.

May 14, 2002 — City To Provide “The String Thing” For Newspaper Recycling
In an effort to further encourage newspaper recycling by city residents, Mayor Stephen R. Reed today unveiled the city’s new “String Thing”, a free, prepackaged device which allows for the easy bundling of recyclable newsprint. The “String Things” will be distributed free of charge to all city residential waste disposal customers on their normal trash collection day, with workers placing a new one in each recycling bin after it is emptied.

May 13, 2002 — Mayor Presents Police Awards
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today gave official recognition to the outstanding efforts of more than 100 city police officers, citizens, public employees and others for actions ranging from saving lives to the capture of armed and dangerous criminal suspects. The awards program was first begun by the Mayor in the 1980’s as a way for the city to recognize the many contributions of the city’s police officers and citizens to public safety.
