CITY BEGINS NEWSPAPER RECYCLING ON NOVEMBER 1; BUNDLES TO BE PICKED UP ON NORMAL RECYCLING DAY

Harrisburg, PA — Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that the City of Harrisburg will begin newspaper recycling pick-ups on November 1. The newsprint pick-up is in addition to the city’s existing recycling program for glass, plastic and metal food packaging waste. The new recycling initiative includes only newsprint and residents are directed to not place other types of wastepaper in with their recyclable newspapers as it reduces the value of recycled newsprint.

Reed said Harrisburg became one of the first communities in the state to adopt a city-wide recycling program in 1989. The city has since conducted weekly curbside collection of glass, plastic and metal food packaging materials.

The newly added newspaper recycling collection effort will work in conjunction with the city’s existing recyclable material pick-ups, with residents directed to place their newspapers with the rest of their existing recyclable pick-ups. Residents are asked to place their newspapers in a paper bag, or bundled with twine, and then place the bundle on top of their blue recycling containers. Residents should not place their newspapers in plastic bags.

The Mayor said the addition of newspapers to the recyclable pick-ups will help to reduce the amount of the city’s solid waste being disposed of in the Harrisburg Resource Recovery Facility, providing a benefit to the environment and also saving money for the city.
