HARRISBURG POLICE MAKE TWO ADDITIONAL ILLEGAL DUMPING ARRESTS

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today said that Harrisburg Police have made two additional arrests in connection with illegal dumping activities within the city. Both of the individuals involved live in surrounding suburbs and came into the city to illegally dump debris.

CITY HOLIDAY PARADE KICKS OFF THE REGION’S HOLIDAY SEASON – SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 22, AT 10:00 AM

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today invited residents and visitors from throughout the midstate to the City of Harrisburg’s 2008 Holiday Parade, set to begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2008, in downtown Harrisburg. The popular annual holiday tradition kicks off the Thanksgiving-Hanukkah-Christmas-Kwanzaa-New Year’s Eve Season for the Greater Harrisburg Region.

FITNESS EQUIPMENT AT RIVERFRONT PARK TO BE REMOVED AND REPLACED;
CAPITAL BLUECROSS TO FUND PROJECT

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that Capital BlueCross has provided funding to the City of Harrisburg to remove the old fitness equipment located throughout Riverfront Park and to replace to it with new, state-of-the-art equipment. Crews will begin removing the old equipment this week and installation of the new equipment is slated for completion in early-Spring of 2009.

M&T BANK TO PARTNER WITH CITY OF HARRISBURG FOR 7TH CONSECUTIVE YEAR TO PRESENT NEW YEAR’S EVE CELEBRATION

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that M&T Bank will once again partner with the City in presenting the popular M&T Bank New Year’s Eve Celebration. This marks the seventh consecutive year of partnership between the City of Harrisburg and M&T Bank. The midstate’s most popular New Year’s Eve Celebration includes live entertainment, fireworks and children’s entertainment and begins at 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2008.

FOREIGN DELEGATIONS TO VISIT LOCAL BUSINESSES THROUGH PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN CITY AND CENTER FOR INTERCULTURAL EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today said that Center for Intercultural Education and Development at Georgetown University has brought the first of many groups of foreign students and executives to Central Pennsylvania to visit area businesses and meet with executives as part of a newly-formed partnership between the City of Harrisburg and the Center for Intercultural Education and Development (CIED). Several visits are being planned for the coming year.

NEIGHBORHOOD BLIGHT REMEDIATION CONTINUES CITY-WIDE

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced additional actions that have been taken over the past month to combat illegal dumping that occurs in the City of Harrisburg. Reed said four arrests have been made in connection with seven separate dumping instances. Each offender has been charged with several counts of illegally dumping debris and in at least half of the instances, the offenders are not City residents and traveled from their home community to dump in the City.

MAJOR UPTOWN HOUSING UPGRADE AND RENOVATION PROJECT FIRST PHASE COMPLETED; HOMES FOR SALE

Mayor Stephen R. Reed and officials from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) today dedicated a major city-sponsored housing upgrade and renovation project that has included the acquisition and current or future rehabilitation of over 25 properties, the demolition of 23 blighted properties, and an overall investment of $2,046,328 in a targeted Uptown area.

CITY OBSERVES NATIONAL LEAD POISONING PREVENTION WEEKS WITH CHILDREN’S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

More homes and apartments with lead paint hazards have been treated this year under Harrisburg’s award-winning lead poisoning prevention program, Mayor Stephen R. Reed today reported for the kick-off of the city’s annual observances of Lead Paint Hazard Weeks at the YWCA of Greater Harrisburg. The City’s lead abatement efforts were funded this year by a $2.1 million U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Lead Hazard Control Grant and a $249,000 PA Department of Health grant.

MIDTOWN FULTON BANK BRANCH TO RELOCATE TO GROWING CAMPUS DISTRICT AT N. 3RD & REILY

Congressman Tim Holden(PA-17), State Senator Jeff Piccola and Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that the Fulton Bank Branch Office at 1401 N. Third Street will be relocating one block north to the evolving Midtown Campus District at N. Third and Reily Streets. The new branch will be opposite the newly restored HACC Midtown II center and across the street from the now-under construction Campus Square Building.

CAPITAL AREA SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR NEW FACILITY IN STRAWBERRY SQUARE

Mayor Stephen R. Reed, the Strawberry Square Development Corporation and the Capital Area Intermediate Unit (CAIU) today announced plans for a new 10,400 square foot home on the first floor in Strawberry Square (Third and Walnut Streets) for the Capital Area School for the Arts (CASA) which is slated to open in August of 2009.

CITY ‘TRICK OR TREAT’ NIGHT SET FOR THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30, FROM 6:00 – 8:00 PM

Mayor Stephen R. Reed reminds city residents that Trick or Treat Night in Harrisburg and most of Dauphin County’s other municipalities will be held on Thursday, October 30, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The date and time for the fun-filled evening is annually set by the Dauphin County Chiefs of Police Association.

ALL CITY PHONE LINES, INCLUDING EMERGENCY DISPATCH CENTER, TO BE DOWN FROM 3:45 AM TO 4:30 AM ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2008

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today said that all incoming and outgoing city phone lines, including non-emergency lines at the city’s emergency dispatch center, will be inactive from 3:45 a.m. until 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 30, 2008. The city’s 911 system will be unaffected and will remain operational.

HARRISBURG SCHOOL DISTRICT’S ‘AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM’ IN FULL SWING

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today said that the Harrisburg School District’s 2008-2009 after-school program, now in its seventh year, is in full swing at all of the district’s 11 elementary schools. The program runs Monday through Friday from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at all locations except for the Scott School which runs from Monday through Thursday.

CITY RECEIVES $300,000.00 IN STATE FUNDING FOR NEIGHBORHOOD PLANNING AND IMPROVEMENTS

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today said that the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) has awarded the City three New Communities Grants for neighborhood planning and improvements. The grants are part of the Elm Street neighborhood revitalization program for residential and mixed-use areas in proximity to central business districts.

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that the City’s Tenth Annual "Get Hooked on Fishing Derby" will be held at the Jackson–Lick Pool at 1201 N. Sixth Street during the weekend of September 13-15, 2008. The free fishing derby will be open to youth only on Saturday, September 13. On Sunday, September 14, and Monday, September 15, the derby will be open to families, seniors, and special needs groups.

UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA STUDY GIVES HSD REFORM EFFORT
HIGH MARKS; MORE SCHOOLS IN DISTRICT ATTAIN STATE PROGRESS
BENCHMARKS – FEWER STUDENTS NOW TESTING BELOW BASIC LEVEL

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today said that a recent University of Pennsylvania study hailed the reform efforts underway in the Harrisburg School District, with the District’s highest ever levels of progress now being registered according to state proficiency guidelines. Five city schools attained Average Yearly Progress (AYP) levels this year with another barely missing the state-mandated benchmark. Only three city schools attained the ranking last year.
